In Michigan we refer going to the Upper Peninsula as the UP. So when I ran across this little bit about UP, I was thinking something else.

So here goes …

There is a two-letter word in the English language that, perhaps, has more meanings than any other two-letter word. That word is UP.  It is shown in the dictionary being used as an adverb, preposition, adjective, noun or verb.

It’s easy to understand UP meaning toward the sky, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP?

At a meeting, why does a topic come UP?  Why do we speak UP and why are officers UP for election?  Why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report?

We call UP our friends and brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver, warm UP leftovers and clean UP the kitchen.

We lock UP the house and some guys fix UP old cars.

People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite and think UP excuses.

To be dressed is one thing, but to be dressed UP is special.

This UP is confusing ~ a drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP.

We open UP a store in the morning, and then we close it UP at night.

We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP!

In order to be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, you should look UP the word in a dictionary.  In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 25% of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions.  If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used.  It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don’t give UP, you may wind UP with a hundred or more.

When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP.  When the sun comes out, we say it is clearing UP.  When it rains, it wets UP the earth.  When it does not rain for a while, things dry UP.

I could go on and one, but I’ll wrap UP as my time is UP.  Time to shut UP!

Oh, can’t overlook this ~ what is the first thing you do in the morning and the last thing you do at night?

U P!

I am having a great time ...

Glider time again .... gotta love it!

I can hardly wait for next summer.

So just for the heck of it (and because I was invited) I am at Emerging's home in Des Moines enjoying the company of she and her family ... and the glider I posted about earlier.

For a view of the glider in motion at E's house

We have been sitting outside most every night this week, with a bonfire going to add to the ambience, and warm the area a bit, but actually we didn't need the fire for heat, just the glow of the fire ~ it is so nice.

I am so enjoying having another great visit here in the Des Moines area with friends ~ it is very nice!

I'll see y'all in tblog land in a bit as we have some more fun things to do while I am here.

((hugs))

* what are the rest of you doing for fun?

Happy Halloween ... on to Ladyg's party

Happy Halloween ...

I am bringing cookies to the party

Enjoy ~ even if it is a bit late!

Stay healthy, please...

 Here are some simple steps to avoid getting the flu of any kind.

The only portals of entry are the nostrils and mouth/throat.  In a global epidemic of this nature, it's almost impossible to avoid coming into contact with H1N1 in spite of all precautions.  Contact with H1N1 is not so much of a problem as proliferation (further growth) of the germ is.

    & nbsp;
While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1 infection, in order to prevent proliferation, aggravation of symptoms and development of secondary infections, some very simple steps, not fully highlighted in most official communications, can be practiced:

1. Frequent hand washing (well highlighted in all official communications).
    & nbsp;
2. Use the "Hands-off-the-face& quot; approach.  Resist all temptations to touch any part of face (unless needed for eating or bathing).
    & nbsp;
3. Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine, if you don't trust salt).  H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms.  Simple gargling prevents proliferation.  In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected one. Don't underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method.
    & nbsp;
4. Similar to 3 above, clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water.  Not everybody may be good at using a Neti pot (very good Yoga ritual to clean nasal cavities), but just blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.
    & nbsp;

5. Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C (citrus fruits).  If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption.
    & nbsp;        & nbsp;
6. Drink as much warm liquids (tea, coffee, etc) as you can.  Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction.  They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm.

I received this as an email from a nurse friend of mine.

It is common sense, but doesn't hurt to be reminded again.

Stay healthy, please!  Being sick is no fun at all!

Changing seasons ...

Hello everyone …

Brrrr ~ why does it have to get so cold, so quickly?

What happened to gradual changing of seasons?

No “snow” yet, but it was so cold this morning I needed to dig out my gloves from the glove-box in the car … glad they were in there from last winter … hmm, perhaps that is why it is called a “glove box” … suppose?

Huddle together and keep warm!
