Stay healthy, please...

 Here are some simple steps to avoid getting the flu of any kind.

The only portals of entry are the nostrils and mouth/throat.  In a global epidemic of this nature, it's almost impossible to avoid coming into contact with H1N1 in spite of all precautions.  Contact with H1N1 is not so much of a problem as proliferation (further growth) of the germ is.

    & nbsp;
While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1 infection, in order to prevent proliferation, aggravation of symptoms and development of secondary infections, some very simple steps, not fully highlighted in most official communications, can be practiced:

1. Frequent hand washing (well highlighted in all official communications).
    & nbsp;
2. Use the "Hands-off-the-face& quot; approach.  Resist all temptations to touch any part of face (unless needed for eating or bathing).
    & nbsp;
3. Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine, if you don't trust salt).  H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms.  Simple gargling prevents proliferation.  In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected one. Don't underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method.
    & nbsp;
4. Similar to 3 above, clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water.  Not everybody may be good at using a Neti pot (very good Yoga ritual to clean nasal cavities), but just blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.
    & nbsp;

5. Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C (citrus fruits).  If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption.
    & nbsp;        & nbsp;
6. Drink as much warm liquids (tea, coffee, etc) as you can.  Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction.  They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm.

I received this as an email from a nurse friend of mine.

It is common sense, but doesn't hurt to be reminded again.

Stay healthy, please!  Being sick is no fun at all!

Changing seasons ...

Hello everyone …

Brrrr ~ why does it have to get so cold, so quickly?

What happened to gradual changing of seasons?

No “snow” yet, but it was so cold this morning I needed to dig out my gloves from the glove-box in the car … glad they were in there from last winter … hmm, perhaps that is why it is called a “glove box” … suppose?

Huddle together and keep warm!

Hoarding stuff...

Lady G made a post about hoarding ... I made a comment with the following, but tblog would not allow it due to the reference from youtube I guess....

So I thought ... hmm, let's see if it can be posted as an entry rather than a comment.

So ~ here it is.

Reminds me of George Carlin's routine on "stuff"

...  Their stuff is shit and your shit is stuff  ...

Take a look if you'd like ~

(that is if they tblog will allow it)

We are w/o power here in my neighborhood … and I can't sleep ... so I got my phone cord out and hooked up the computer and am now on dial-up service.  I know, it would/should be a perfect time to sleep, but I just can't seem to get back to sleep.  The power went off about 4:45 and I was up using the bathroom and all of a sudden ~ total darkness ~ except for the full moon outside!

Anyway, I have a light plugged into the outlet in my bedroom and if/when power goes out it switches on so that is helpful … and that allows me to find candles or other battery operated lights if that is what I need.

And w/o power for TV, or to read, it makes for a really quiet time.

I did see the power company trucks working in the area after about the first half hour of darkness, but so far nothing is working.   Of interest is that the streetlights are on, and the school across the street has power, or at least their yard lights are on and their sign is lit up.  So I am sure it is just something wrong here in the community.  Probably some squirrel got fried in the transformer and it is affecting a several block area.

So far it is three hours w/o power.  Soon it will be daylight and then at least I can go outside for a walk.  Probably can’t get the car out of the garage, as I’m not sure I am strong enough to manually raise the garage door.  However, we are not usually w/o power for a very long time.   Or else it is TPTB telling me to stay home and clean house!   Nahhh!

Anyway, since I can’t sleep, or watch TV, I thought I’d stop by and say “Howdy”

'yawn' ... maybe I'll see if I can go to sleep for a bit ... 'yawn'

Daylight comes now...

Fettuccini Alfredo and soy sauce…

One day last week I was preparing dinner and boiling my pasta and had the cover on the pot so that it would boil sooner.  However I had turned away a bit and consequently the pot started to boil over.  Since I had some oil in the water it snuffed out the fire on that burner, so I quickly turned it off and moved the pot to the back burner.  I then hurried to wipe up the mess before going on with the rest of the preparation of the meal.  As I was wiping up around the burner my finger accidentally touched the hot grate and I burned my finger.  It hurt quite a bit but I was determined to clean off the stovetop so that I could continue with the preparation of the meal.

I remembered a bit of advice given by a friend to put soy sauce on the burn.  I quickly reached into the cupboard and found the soy sauce and proceeded to pour some on my finger.  The burn was near the end of the finger, by the nail, and it was quite tender.  It hurt a lot and I was reminded not to do anything that foolish again.  (riiight!)

But as we went ahead with the meal and all, I forgot about the burn.  The next day as I was doing something else and saw the bottle of soy sauce on the counter I remembered the burn incident and thought; “hey, my finger doesn’t hurt.”  I looked at the finger and couldn’t even see where I had burned the finger.

Thank you, Pearl for your advice.  I shall remember it, as I’m likely to make a similar mistake again.  And it still amazes me that there was no evidence of a burn!
